About the Role
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Eastern and Southern African (ESAF) Regional Office in Nairobi, Kenya is offering an internship opportunity within the Air Traffic Management (ATM) and Search and Rescue (SAR) section. This 6-month internship is designed to provide practical experience to students or recent graduates interested in global civil aviation administration and governance.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Documentation: Assist in preparing technical briefs, working papers, reports, and presentations related to Air Traffic Management (ATM), Aeronautical Information Management (AIM), and Search and Rescue.
Data Compilation and Analysis: Support the compilation, maintenance, and analysis of operational performance and implementation data related to ATM and AIM systems and programmes.
Regional Coordination Support: Assist in monitoring and following up on actions arising from regional planning, coordination, and implementation meetings related to air navigation and operational efficiency.
Search and Rescue (SAR) Tracking: Support the coordination, monitoring, and tracking of regional SAR activities to enhance preparedness and implementation across the ESAF Region.
SAR Documentation Review: Assist in reviewing SAR contingency plans, exercise reports, and related operational documentation to support compliance with international standards.
Gap Analysis: Contribute to identifying and analyzing implementation gaps in Search and Rescue (SAR) systems and support related reporting and follow-up mechanisms.
Action Item Tracking: Support tracking of action items and implementation progress from regional planning and implementation groups and associated technical bodies.
Reporting: Assist in drafting meeting summaries, technical records, and outcome reports to support effective regional coordination.
Database Maintenance: Support the maintenance of electronic records, databases, and information systems related to ATM, AIM, and SAR activities.
Stakeholder Engagement: Support coordination and engagement with civil aviation authorities, air navigation service providers, and regional stakeholders to facilitate implementation of regional priorities.

Requirements & Qualifications
Education: At the time of application, candidates must be enrolled in or have completed a Bachelor's degree programme in Aeronautical Engineering, Aviation, Air Transport Management, Aviation Safety Management, Electrical or Electronic Engineering (Telecommunications/Navigation Systems), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), or Transport and Logistics Management.
Experience: No prior work experience is required. Academic training and skills should be relevant and of benefit to the ICAO ESAF Region.
Languages: Fluent reading, writing, and speaking abilities in English are essential. Working knowledge of French is desirable.
Conditions of Internship
Stipend: Interns will receive a stipend. All other costs related to travel, insurance, accommodation, and living expenses must be borne by the intern.
Duration: The duration is 6 months on a full-time basis (5 days a week).
Exclusivity: Interns shall not be eligible for other forms of employment within ICAO during the internship period.
