Role Overview
The Internal Audit and Risk Manager plays a crucial role in developing and executing internal risk-based audit strategies, ensuring control compliance, driving operational efficiencies, and managing organizational risks across Fairtrade Africa (FTA).
Duties & Responsibilities
Audit Management
Lead the development and implementation of an internal risk-based audit strategy and annual plan for the FTA.
Plan and undertake audits to assess controls, operational and technical efficiencies, and compliance with selected policies, procedures, and regulations.
Drive operational improvements throughout the organization to enhance internal controls and overall efficiencies.
Direct implementation and compliance of internal controls, identifying and correcting deficiencies.
Support external auditors for corporate compliance and guide annual audit plan development.
Promote the highest standards of ethics across FTA based on integrity, objectivity, competence, and confidentiality.
Ensure due diligence in managing FTA's affairs and oversee the preparation of Internal Audit systems, procedures, and guidelines.
Supervises work programmes to ensure audits are properly planned and managed.
Review internal controls, document their effectiveness/adequacy, and recommend mitigation measures.
Liaise with external auditors and track follow-ups on internal/external audit recommendations.
Undertake investigations as appropriate and supervise, train, and develop direct reports.
Risk Management
Coordinate cross-functional efforts within FTA to improve proactive risk management and business continuity.
Oversee FTA's risk portfolio and identify priority areas for risk assessment and mitigation planning.
Advise on rating and ranking critical/high compliance risks for assessment inclusion.
Support and empower Business Unit management in carrying out their respective risk activities.
Monitor maintenance and updates of the strategic risk register and implementation of risk action plans.
Assist Line Managers in identifying and analyzing inherent risks.
Follow up on open issues and work with management to ensure closure of risk action plans.
Manage third parties engaged in Risk Management Consultancy.
Coordinate post-incident post-mortems and monitor Risk and Control Self Assessments.
Follow up on the implementation of Board resolutions regarding risk.
Knowledge, Experience, and Skills
Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Mathematics, Actuarial Science, Statistics, Economics, or an equivalent field.
Master’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Mathematics, Statistics, Risk Management or equivalent is an added advantage.
Professional accounting certification (CPA, ACCA, or equivalent).
Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), or Risk Management qualification.
Experience & Knowledge
Minimum 10 years of relevant work experience, with at least 4 years in a management role.
Mandatory fluency in English; working knowledge of French is an advantage.
Good understanding of tax laws across Africa.
Thorough understanding of international NGO financial reporting standards.
Working knowledge of financial controls, systems, accounting regulations, and development partner reporting requirements.
