Job Description
Role Overview
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is the UN agency for human settlements, mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities. The Urban Law Section, under the direct supervision of the Legal Specialist (PLS), is seeking an intern to support research, project implementation, and database management related to urban legislation.
Key Responsibilities
Research and Studies: Assist in conducting research on various urban law topics, including urban planning law, housing law, public participation, and climate-smart urban planning legislation.
Project Support: Provide proactive and responsive backstopping support to ongoing and upcoming projects, ensuring smooth implementation and overcoming challenges.
Data Analysis: Conduct in-depth analysis and presentation of data collected from diverse sources to offer insights for informed decision-making.
Drafting and Publications: Contribute to written outputs, draft background papers, reports, and studies; actively participate in developing publications on housing, land, and property rights.
Database Maintenance: Assist in the population and maintenance of the UrbanLex database, ensuring its accuracy and relevance as a comprehensive resource.
Toolkit Development: Apply the Section's toolkits and contribute to their enhancement by incorporating feedback and innovative approaches.
Communication: Create communication materials and updates for the Section's websites to foster effective dissemination of information.
Event Organization: Help organize expert group meetings, consultative sessions, conferences, and other events, and support outreach activities within the urban law community.
Personal Project: Produce a personal project that aligns with the Section's goals and mission.
Other Duties: Undertake additional tasks as required to ensure the effective functioning of the Section.
Qualifications and Skills
Education Status: Applicants must be enrolled in a graduate school programme (Master's or higher), or in the final academic year of a first university degree program (Bachelor's level), or have recently graduated with a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD.
Field of Study: Studies in Law, International Relations, or Diplomacy are preferred. The field of study must be closely related to the internship.
Technical Proficiency: Must be computer literate in standard software applications, particularly the Microsoft Office Suite.
Interpersonal Skills: Demonstrated ability to interact successfully with individuals from different cultural backgrounds and a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter.
Experience: Professional work experience is not required for UN internships, but a relevant academic background is essential.
