Job Description
The Information Management Assistant (G6) at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) serves as a critical focal point for geospatial data validation and analysis. The role involves ensuring the quality and adherence of all map products to United Nations mapping rules and guidelines, supporting environmental decision-making through advanced GIS technologies, and providing administrative and training support within the unit.
Responsibilities
Geospatial Mapping and Quality Assurance
Serve as the UNEP focal point for validation, quality assurance, and quality control of all geospatial-related products on publications, presentations, and electronic platforms.
Review, validate, and clear all maps and country names prior to issuance to ensure adherence with United Nations mapping rules and guidelines.
Maintain up-to-date geospatial United Nations-approved basemap datasets which form the base for organization-wide mapping.
Geospatial Data and Information Management
Conduct geospatial data management, analysis, and visualization using GIS technologies to provide early warning information for environmental decision-making.
Identify, collate, and compile relevant data on specific environmental themes from existing sources to identify trends or patterns.
Create operational dashboards and story maps for interactive data visualization and sharing.
Perform GIS processing on UNEP projects.
Provide inputs for the implementation of the One UN Geospatial Situation Room, including development of interactive online web mapping services.
Training and Administrative Tasks
Provide geospatial training and guidance to new/junior staff as well as other UNEP personnel.
Draft and prepare correspondence, reports, debriefings, and memos related to geospatial data.
Lead recruitment and hiring of United Nations Volunteers (UNVs), consultants, and interns by developing terms of reference and conducting interviews.
Supervise daily activities of UNVs and interns.
Assist with visualizations and updating information materials such as web pages or brochures.
Requirements
Education
A High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in geospatial information, analysis, mapping, data visualization, or information management.
Note: The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to five (5) years for candidates who possess a first-level University degree.
Required: Experience with database programming languages such as Python and SQL.
Required: Experience with web GIS platforms.
Required: Proficiency in GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS), remote sensing tools, and spatial databases.
Desirable: Experience in data modeling and database management.
Desirable: One (1) year or more of experience in data analytics or a related area.
