PATH is an international organization that drives transformative innovation to save lives and improve health, especially among women and children. We are seeking an Infectious Disease Surveillance Advisor who will serve as a subject matter expert to assist with the technical surveillance aspects of our project. This role involves developing and implementing policies and processes, ensuring quality delivery of service on surveillance activities in Kenya and South Sudan, and providing technical leadership in animal and human disease surveillance aligned with International Health Regulations and other global guidelines.
Responsibilities
Assist with the day-to-day technical and operational aspects of projects in Kenya (approximately 60%) and South Sudan (approximately 40%).
Support the development, coordination, and implementation of surveillance activities in the programmatic workplan, including epidemiological surveillance and laboratory surveillance of zoonotic, epidemic-, and pandemic-prone diseases.
Manage and support outbreak investigations at national and subnational levels in Kenya and South Sudan.
Support regional technical staff members, ensuring project activities remain on track and are informed by technical expertise.
Review and revise project and donor reports, and draft publications and external communication materials.
Coordinate and collaborate with a diverse group of organizations, including ministries of health, district health staff, and international development partner organizations.
Provide input on national guidelines and normative policies for subject matter areas of expertise.
Serve as a technical expert on animal and human disease surveillance, aligning with Joint External Evaluation results and International Health Regulations.
Assist with the production and timely dissemination of high-quality data and information, including internal/external situation reports (SitReps), bulletins, and health risk assessments.
Support internal learning and development regarding infectious disease surveillance activities within PATH.
Qualifications and Experience
Master’s degree or its international equivalent in Knowledge/Information in epidemiology, public health, veterinary medicine, or a related field from a recognized institution.
At least 5 years of relevant international experience in applying epidemiological principles and methods in the design, implementation, and management of surveillance systems.
Experience in epidemiological analysis, training, and research.
Experience working on large USG-funded projects or technical implementation.
Demonstrated ability to coordinate staff across multiple projects simultaneously.
Experience in One Health, zoonotic diseases, surveillance systems, and outbreak investigation and control in Kenya and South Sudan.
In-depth knowledge of public health issues, trends, epidemiological theory, and practices.
Knowledge and skills in supporting cooperation among countries for health development.
Ability to analyze information, identify problems, and recommend solutions for different country contexts.
Ability to work in a complex environment with short deadlines and a high emphasis on quality.
