Role Purpose
The Group Head Asset & Liability Management is responsible for executing the ALM strategy within the Group, ensuring an efficient and well-coordinated approach to managing liquidity risk and interest rate risk in the balance sheet. The role holder contributes to the optimization of the balance sheet by ensuring adherence to internal policies, regulatory requirements, and international best practices. Additionally, the position provides support to Country Treasurers in managing the overall balance sheet structure, execution, investment management portfolios (AFS and HTM), and liquidity/funding by driving capital efficient returns. The role also includes subsidiary oversight, providing guidance and technical challenge to ALM teams in assigned subsidiaries.
Key Responsibilities
Treasury Strategy
- Liquidity Management: Oversee and enhance treasury liquidity processes to monitor and manage the bank’s liquidity positions (including CRR and gap analysis) to ensure no regulatory breaches.
- Interest Rate Risk Management: Collaborate with the Group Asset and Liability Committee (GALCO) to mitigate potential impacts from interest rate and liquidity risks, particularly concerning IRRBB exposures.
- Policy Development: Partner with the CFO and Group Treasurer to ensure effective execution of ALM policies, guidelines, and product manuals.
- Balance Sheet Management: Focus on balance sheet analytics, comprehensive forecasting, and accurate financial modeling to inform strategic decision-making.
- Funding Optimization: Formulate strategies to manage liquidity and funding positions optimally, ensuring diversification of the funding base and lengthening of the funding profile.
Risk Management
- Limit Management: Monitor and escalate liquidity and IRRBB risks, ensuring strict adherence to approved limits and implementing remedial actions within governance frameworks.
- Compliance: Ensure systems and processes comply with Group and country treasury policies and AML procedures.
- Governance: Provide leadership and oversight over prudent risk management practices across all subsidiaries.
Processes and Operations
- Market Analysis: Evaluate market dynamics and evolving regulatory environments to align with international ALM best practices.
- Financial Performance: Ensure maximum return on excess liquidity and investment securities while minimizing costs of funding and interest rate volatility.
- FTP Framework: Implement the Group’s Funds Transfer Pricing (FTP) Framework to drive correct balance sheet behavior.
- Regulatory Frameworks: Collaborate with Risk, Finance, and Credit units to ensure ICAAP and ILAAP frameworks are fit for purpose.
- Budgeting: Achieve ALM budgets and manage financial resources to boost capital accretive returns.
Talent Management
- Build a strong talent pipeline and mentor sales teams across traditional and digital channels.
- Drive a high-performance culture focused on accountability, innovation, and client-centricity.
- Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in talent development and succession planning.
Complexities Expected
- Operating across multiple countries and diverse regulatory environments across the Group footprint.
- Managing cross-functional responsibilities involving Treasury, Finance, Risk, Compliance, IT, and Operations.
- Balancing regulatory compliance, liquidity optimization, and profitability objectives under dynamic market conditions.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Education: Post-graduate degree in Business, Finance, Economics, Statistics, or a related field. A Master’s degree is beneficial but not mandatory.
- Certifications: Professional certification such as CFA, FRM, or CA is strongly preferred. ACI Dealing Certificate is a mandatory requirement.
- Experience: 10+ years’ experience in Treasury or Finance, with a minimum of 5 years in a senior leadership role.
- Technical Expertise: Deep expertise in global liquidity management, funding, cash pooling, balance sheet optimization, and hedging strategies.
- Regional Knowledge: Strong understanding of African financial markets and cross-border Treasury operations.
- Systems: Proven experience with Treasury Management Systems (TMS) and related technologies.
- Analytical Skills: Advanced analytical, financial modelling, and presentation skills (Excel, PowerPoint).
