Job Description
Role Overview
ACLED (Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project) is seeking Global Crisis Coders to support its data production efforts. This role is pivotal in maintaining real-time data coverage during significant global conflict crises. When a crisis is declared, the Global Crisis Coder serves as the primary data production lead. During periods of relative stability, the role transitions to supporting the Quality Assurance (QA) team and regional desks with data review and methodological development.
Key Responsibilities
Crisis Response: Act as the lead coder for daily data production during major global conflict crises as designated by ACLED or its clients.
Data Management: Produce and execute daily uploads of conflict event data using established sourcing lists, translation tools, and expedited processes.
Quality Control: Maintain high data quality standards consistent with regular weekly releases, ensuring accuracy and methodological compliance.
Coordination: Facilitate communication between Researchers, desk management, and the crisis coder team; integrate local expert knowledge into coding outputs.
Quality Assurance Support: During non-crisis periods, assist in reviewing new sources, monitoring data submissions for consistency, and implementing corrective actions.
Methodology & Projects: Contribute to the development of ACLED methodology, participate in QA discussions, and manage tasks via Asana.
Ad Hoc Support: Provide real-time coding assistance to Global Data Collection (GDC) desks and handle other responsibilities as defined by supervisors.
Requirements
Education: A Bachelor’s degree (BA/BSc/HND) in a relevant field.
Adaptability: High flexibility to handle shifting focuses, ad-hoc assignments, and new coding environments.
Technical Skills: Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel (formulas, handling large datasets, data manipulation) is essential. Familiarity with PowerBI or Tableau is an advantage.
Analytical Ability: Ability to interpret complex data within various regional conflict contexts.
Methodological Knowledge: In-depth understanding of ACLED’s general and regional methodologies. Familiarity with African or Middle Eastern coding rules is highly desired.
Communication: Exceptional written and spoken English skills. Fluency in French or Arabic is a significant advantage.
Project Management: Proven ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and meet strict daily deadlines under pressure.
Availability: While standard hours are Monday to Friday, flexibility for weekend work is required during crisis periods.
Location Preference: Candidates in Asia or the Americas timezones are highly preferred to ensure global coverage.
