Role Overview
The Finance Manager is a critical leadership role responsible for owning the monthly close process and production of management accounts to board standard. This individual will deliver clear, commercially focused commentary on performance drivers, build financial models for a dynamic environment, and lead a finance team of approximately 10 people. The role involves strategic oversight of cash flow, supplier payment strategies, margin management, and the implementation of rigorous cost controls while driving automation and system improvements.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Management Accounts
- Own the monthly close process and production of management accounts (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow).
- Deliver clear, commercially focused commentary on performance drivers, risks, and recommended actions.
- Build and maintain financial models that adapt to a high-growth, dynamic environment.
- Support investor and board reporting, including variance analysis and forward-looking commentary.
Cash Flow, Treasury & Working Capital
- Lead the rolling cash flow forecasting process (minimum 13-week horizon) with scenario planning.
- Own working capital management end-to-end: payables days, receivables, and cash conversion cycle.
- Manage banking relationships and day-to-day treasury operations.
- Translate financial performance into cash impact and drive corrective action.
Supplier Strategy & Accounts Payable
- Own the accounts payable function and supplier payment strategy.
- Develop and maintain a structured approach to supplier payment terms.
- Lead supplier negotiations on payment terms, rebates, and promotional contributions.
- Monitor aged creditor positions and ensure timely, accurate supplier statement reconciliations.
Margins & Profitability
- Develop and execute strategies for margin management across product categories and channels.
- Partner with commercial and operations teams to identify and close margin leakage.
- Oversee product costing, promotions analysis, and contribution margin tracking.
Cost Control & Operational Finance
- Implement rigorous cost control across all departments.
- Oversee inventory control processes, supporting stock optimisation and waste reduction.
- Monitor and report on inventory write-offs, expiry, and shrinkage.
- Provide financial insight into key operational decisions such as logistics and fulfilment.
Team Leadership & Development
- Lead a finance team of approximately 10 people, including senior and junior staff.
- Set clear objectives, conduct performance reviews, and coach/upskill the team.
- Establish a culture of accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Systems, Automation & Master Data
- Own financial master data and act as a core architect of data standards.
- Work with ERP Consultants to continuously improve Microsoft Dynamics reporting and workflows.
- Drive automation using AI and digital tools to reduce manual effort and increase accuracy.
Compliance, Audit & Controls
- Manage the external audit relationship and ensure audit readiness.
- Ensure compliance with all Kenyan regulatory requirements: VAT, Withholding Tax, Corporate Tax, and statutory filings.
- Design and maintain pragmatic financial controls appropriate for a high-growth environment.
Qualifications and Experience
- CPA (K), ACCA, or equivalent professional qualification.
- Bachelor’s degree in a business-related field.
- 5+ years of experience in chaotic, high-growth, and complex working environments with ownership of the finance function.
- Hands-on experience with Microsoft Dynamics or a comparable ERP system.
