Role Overview
The Field Technician at West Indian Ocean Cable Company (WIOCC) is responsible for assisting in field support, resolving network incidents and assigned problems, and the installation, maintenance, and management of critical network equipment. Reporting to the Regional Operations Manager, this role ensures the continuous performance and reliability of WIOCC's high-speed pan-African capacity network.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Field Operations: Provide 24/7 field assistance, including on-call support and working during nights, weekends, and public holidays as necessary.
- Network Maintenance: Perform proactive monitoring of equipment and facilities; conduct cross-connects and jumping.
- Deployment: Assist in network installation, testing, commissioning, integration, and bringing services into live operation.
- Asset Management: Manage records, inventory, and spares. Receive hardware, perform bench testing, and handle storage and RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) returns.
- Incident Resolution: Work closely with the NOC (Network Operations Center) and TAC (Technical Assistance Center) to resolve technical incidents and problems.
- Support Services: Provide Service Desk coverage and support technical shareholders, consultancy, and sales support as required.
- Technical Reporting: Maintain accurate and concise records in company systems and create ad-hoc reports regarding network quality and performance.
- General Support: Assist other departments and projects as requested by the Programme Manager and drive company vehicles for field duties.
- Compliance: Adhere strictly to all company policies and procedures.
Qualifications and Experience
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related technical field.
- Certifications: CCNA, Cisco, MikroTik, and Fiber Optic certifications are highly desirable.
- Industry Experience: 3+ years of relevant work experience within the telecommunications industry.
- Technical Knowledge: Proficiency in platforms such as OTN, DWDM, SDH, and Data services (Ethernet, IP/MPLS, OSPF, BGP).
- Hardware Expertise: Hands-on experience supporting transmission and switching equipment from leading manufacturers like Mikrotik, Juniper, and Tejas Networks.
- Compliance: Must possess a valid driver’s license.
