British International Investment (BII) is the UK's development finance institution, dedicated to supporting companies that help developing and emerging countries grow. As an Executive or Associate in the Responsible Investing (RI) sector team, you will lead the RI workstream for both pipeline and portfolio stage transactions, with a particular focus on Environmental and Social (E&S) risk management. This role involves supporting the operationalization of BII’s Policy for Responsible Investment (PRI) requirements, fostering a positive team culture, and contributing to professional development, thought leadership, and market-shaping work.
Key Responsibilities
Transactional Leadership & Oversight
- Lead and conduct Environmental and Social due diligence for pipeline and portfolio investments, providing clear analysis and recommendations to investment teams and senior management.
- Serve as a key liaison between RI and Investment teams, interpreting BII’s Policy for Responsible Investment (PRI) with a focus on E&S governance, and occasionally addressing Business Integrity (BI) and Corporate Governance issues.
- Monitor the portfolio for E&S issues and support relationship management with investees and fund managers.
- Escalate material risks or incidents to ensure robust risk management and compliance.
- Identify macro trends affecting E&S or BI&CG risk management and BII’s broader investment approach.
Operational Support & Issues Management
- Support the development and implementation of internal E&S policies, especially related to climate change risk mitigation.
- Respond to significant E&S-related issues (e.g., policy breaches or incidents) in collaboration with team leads.
- Maintain accurate data and records in line with internal procedural requirements.
Stakeholder Engagement & Thought Leadership
- Participate in industry conferences and forums, sharing knowledge across the RI team.
- Contribute to thought leadership on RI themes, particularly climate and environmental themes across target geographies.
- Collaborate with the Head of RI and Team Managers on strategic initiatives.
Regional Element
- Coordinate RI inputs to regional strategies and meet with prospective investees to introduce BII’s RI requirements.
- Manage relationships with local stakeholders, including investment deal leads and external consultants.
- Develop and share knowledge of local regulations, industry trends, and market intelligence.
Training & Knowledge Sharing
- Design and deliver RI training for internal teams and external investees.
- Develop briefing materials and case studies showcasing the commercial and impact success of E&S practices.
Requirements
- Experience: Significant experience in identifying, assessing, and addressing environmental and social risks, preferably within private equity, banking, or development finance in Africa.
- Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of the IFC Performance Standards, E&S frameworks, and relevant E&S laws/regulations.
- Expertise: Background in climate change risk assessment, mitigation, biodiversity, and waste management.
- Education: University degree (postgraduate qualification preferred) in a relevant discipline.
- Analytical Skills: Excellent research, analytical, and report-writing skills.
- Soft Skills: Proven ability to influence senior business leaders, effective negotiation skills, and a collaborative team-player mindset.
