Emergency Medical Service (EMS) Manager

St. John Ambulance Kenya is seeking a highly experienced EMS Manager to provide strategic leadership, oversee EMS operations, ensure compliance, and drive departmental growth. The role will be responsible for shaping the overall strategic direction of the Emergency Medical Services Department, strengthening operational systems, and ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-centered emergency care. The EMS Manager will champion best practices, lead a multidisciplinary team, develop and enforce clinical and operational standards, and coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to enhance service delivery. This position requires a dynamic leader with strong financial acumen, excellent decision-making capabilities, and the ability to innovate and expand EMS programs in line with St John Kenya’s mission and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• Operational Management: Oversee emergency vehicles, medical supplies, and equipment compliance while coordinating staffing, scheduling, and performance management.
• Strategic Leadership: Develop and monitor departmental budgets, identify funding opportunities, and advise the CEO on EMS-related matters and policy improvements.
• Stakeholder Engagement: Manage ambulance service agreements and contracts, and engage with internal and external stakeholders to resolve operational issues and improve service delivery.
• Clinical Oversight: Supervise EMT students during clinical rotations in collaboration with the course coordinator and investigate contract performance issues in coordination with HR.
• Policy & Compliance: Develop and enforce clinical and operational standards while ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
• Representation: Represent the department in public forums and prepare comprehensive reports and proposals for policy improvements.

Qualifications and Experience

• Education: Master’s degree in Emergency Medical Care, Nursing, Public Health, Health Management, or a related field; and a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant health or emergency services discipline.
• Certification: Certified EMT/Paramedic from a recognized and accredited training institution with valid BLS, ACLS, and First Aid certifications.
• Experience: A minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in Emergency Medical Services, including at least 5 years specifically in a senior management or leadership role.
• Core Skills: Demonstrated leadership, strategic planning, communication, decision-making skills, and strong financial acumen.
