Under the direct supervision of the Programme Management Officer within the Biodiversity, People and Landscapes Unit, the individual contractor will support UNEP’s effective and efficient engagement in the finalization of the SAMPeat project document. The role involves the planning, coordination, and delivery of key meetings and events related to the Global Peatlands Initiative (GPI) Phase II project, including direct support and engagement with government counterparts in Peru and Colombia.
Responsibilities and Duties
Project Development: Support the update and validation of UNEP components of the SAMPeat project through desk research and consortium engagement. Coordinate with partners for meetings and field visits.
Stakeholder Engagement: Engage with government institutions, stakeholders, and GPI partners to refine work packages in the SAMPeat proposal, ensuring alignment with UNEP's role as lead of the Global Peatlands Initiative.
Event Coordination: Support the preparation and delivery of the GPI Partners Meeting and field visits with the Peruvian Government. This includes managing speaker invitations, finalization of agendas, and meeting documentation.
Collaboration: Coordinate with Peruvian agencies (MINAM, SERNANP, IIAP), Colombian representatives, and international partners for successful event delivery.
Participant Management: Ensure high attendance and accessibility for participants from diverse sectors and countries, maintaining gender and geographical balance.
Logistics and Content: Manage speaker logistics, briefing materials, and post-event follow-up. Develop moderator guides, session scripts, and outreach materials.
Outreach: Support the design of event agendas and collaborate with the GPI Coordinator to develop curtain raisers, opening/closing remarks, and talking points for UNEP officials.
Strategic Support: Assist in organizing other key events such as the Peatland Breakthrough launch and the Venice Agreement annual meeting. Support the development of project concepts for funding in South American Mountain and Patagonia Peatland project countries.
Qualifications and Experience
Education: An advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in biology, ecology, or a closely related field is required. A first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
Experience: Minimum of 5 years of professional work experience at the international level on environmental topics related to peatland ecosystems and/or nature-based solutions.
Event Planning: Proven experience in planning large national or international meetings and events, including substance and logistics.
Technical Writing: Demonstrated experience in technical science writing for meeting and outreach materials, including briefing notes and substantive background documents.
Computer Literacy: Proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, etc.) and familiarity with database management.
Core Competencies: Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision and meet tight deadlines.
