Job Description
The Director of Veterinary Services is a senior leadership position responsible for directing, coordinating, and implementing veterinary services programs and projects within Nairobi City County. The role involves managing animal health, animal control, and veterinary public health services, ensuring they align with both county policies and national standards.
Key Responsibilities
Managerial and Supervisory
Direct animal health, animal control, and veterinary public health services within the county.
Coordinate the implementation of policies related to animal health, veterinary public health, and leather development.
Manage human resource capacity development and supervise staff within the directorate.
Oversee fiscal resources, including budget preparation and monitoring adherence.
Manage administrative functions and conduct staff performance appraisals.
Operational Tasks
Promote stakeholder collaboration and participation in animal health and leather development service delivery.
Coordinate veterinary research liaison and training programs within the county.
Oversee the implementation of work plans and preparation of performance contracts.
Provide technical guidance on all aspects of animal health, control, and public health.
Coordinate technical forums, workshops, and seminars for veterinary services.
Facilitate administrative links between the county and the National Directorate of Veterinary Services for disease reporting (OIE standards).
Participate in the monitoring and evaluation of departmental projects and programs.
Requirements
Academic and Professional Qualifications
Master of Science Degree in Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Surgery, Veterinary Public Health, Veterinary Anatomy, Veterinary Pathology and Microbiology, Applied Veterinary Parasitology, Veterinary Epidemiology and Economics, or Occupational Health and Safety.
Bachelor of Science Degree in Veterinary Medicine (BVM) from a recognized institution.
Mandatory registration and current retention by the Kenya Veterinary Board (KVB).
Certificate in a Senior Management Course (lasting not less than 4 weeks) or an equivalent management course from a recognized institution.
Experience
Minimum of ten (10) years of relevant work experience.
At least three (3) years of experience in a senior position within the Public Service or Private Sector.

Proficiency in negotiation and problem-solving.
Ability to work effectively under pressure.
High degree of professional and technical competence.
Compliance with the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya regarding leadership and integrity.
