Role Overview
The Deputy Director, Communications at the Kenya Institute for Public Policy Research and Analysis (KIPPRA) is responsible for providing strategic leadership in the development, implementation, and review of integrated research communication policies and strategies. The role involves managing the Institute’s corporate identity, reputation, and stakeholder engagement to ensure effective dissemination of policy research findings at national, regional, and international levels.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement integrated research communication strategies aligned with the Institute's mandate.
Policy & Framework Management: Oversee the design and execution of communication frameworks to ensure consistent messaging.
Operations Management: Lead the preparation of departmental work plans, budgets, performance reports, and impact assessments.
Research Dissemination: Translate complex research outputs into accessible formats, including policy briefs, newsletters, infographics, podcasts, and documentaries.
Media Relations: Serve as the principal liaison with media, coordinate press coverage, interviews, and opinion editorials.
Crisis Communication: Establish and lead crisis communication protocols and manage reputational risks.
Digital & Multimedia Strategy: Oversee digital communication, website management, and social media strategy, including the integration of AI-driven tools.
Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain relationships with policymakers, development partners, academia, and the private sector.
Institutional Publications: Support the production of the KIPPRA Policy Monitor and other institutional newsletters.
Corporate Social Responsibility: Spearhead the Institute’s CSR initiatives.
Team Leadership: Supervise, mentor, and build capacity within the communications team.
Qualifications and Experience
At least fifteen (15) years’ cumulative experience in communication, with three (3) years at the level of Assistant Director Communication or equivalent.
Bachelor’s degree in Communication, Information Science, Public Relations, Journalism, Media Studies, Linguistics, or a related field.
Master’s degree in Communication, Public Policy Communication, International Relations, Development Communication, or a related field.
Membership in a relevant professional body (e.g., PRSK, MSK, CIPR) in good standing.
Completion of a Leadership course lasting at least four (4) weeks from a recognized institution.
Proficiency in computer applications and statistical software.

Proficiency in communication tools (data visualization, graphic design, video editing, and social media analytics).
Advanced negotiation and presentation skills.
Knowledge of economic modelling.
