Role Overview
The Clinical Nurse in the Surgical Ward is responsible for providing high-quality nursing care to patients. This role involves performing comprehensive assessments, developing and implementing individualized care plans, and monitoring patient progress in a surgical setting. The nurse will work closely with a multidisciplinary team to ensure patient safety, adhere to infection control practices, and participate in quality improvement initiatives to maintain the hospital's standards of care.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Assessment: Complete head-to-toe assessment and re-assessment of patients to identify their care needs.
Care Planning: Develop written care plans based on patients’ needs, monitor and evaluate effectiveness of interventions.
Clinical Monitoring: Carry out hemodynamic monitoring including vital signs, neurological and fluid status; review laboratory and radiological evaluations.
Documentation: Document all assessment data, investigation results, care given, and interactions with the multidisciplinary team and family in an accurate and timely manner.
Medication Management: Administer medication safely, monitor patient responses, and promptly report adverse reactions.
Waste Management: Dispose of clinical and non-clinical waste safely in accordance with hospital guidelines.
Patient Support: Assist patients with activities of daily living such as feeding, bathing, and dressing.
Procedure Assistance: Prepare for and assist physicians in performing procedures such as Lumbar Puncture and insertion of invasive lines.
Surgical Care: Carry out pre- and post-operative care for surgical patients.
Specialized Care: Care for psychiatry patients as per policy and maintain adequate airway management (oxygen therapy, nebulization, suctioning).
Reporting: Promptly report clinical and non-clinical unusual findings or incidents to the nurse manager or physician.
Education: Identify patient and family education needs and implement appropriate teaching.
Safety & Quality: Adhere to infection control practices, participate in quality initiatives (CCPC), and contribute to unit-based nursing education and audits.
Equipment & Logistics: Manage equipment inventory, report non-functional items, and follow discharge protocols including follow-up appointments.
Requirements
Must be a Registered Nurse (RN) from a recognized school of nursing or University.
Current licensure with the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK).
Valid certificate in Basic Life Support (BLS).
Demonstrate evidence-based knowledge of current practices in Medical-Surgical nursing.
