Clinical Nurse, Paeds HDU

Responsibilities

• Patient Assessment: Complete thorough initial assessment and ongoing re-assessment of patients to identify evolving care needs.
• Care Planning: Develop and update written care plans based on changing patient conditions, while monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of nursing interventions.
• Clinical Monitoring: Initiate and interpret cardiac monitoring (both room and central), communicating critical changes immediately to physicians and the Nurse Manager.
• Hemodynamic Management: Conduct hemodynamic monitoring including CVP, ICP, neurological status, fluid status, and interpret laboratory, radiological, and ABG results.
• Documentation: Accurately and timely document all assessment data, investigations, treatments, and multidisciplinary discussions.
• Procedural Support: Assist physicians in emergency procedures such as intubation and the insertion of invasive lines or drains.
• Ventilation Care: Initiate and manage both invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation, including weaning and extubation protocols.
• Specialized Treatments: Perform pediatric hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis as instructed.
• Medication & Nutrition: Administer medications accurately and manage enteral feeding systems, assessing absorption and elimination.
• Emergency Response: Recognize pre-arrest or arrest states, activate the Emergency Response Team, and participate actively in resuscitation.
• Safety & Quality: Adhere to infection control practices, perform safety checks on medical equipment (IV pumps, ventilators, monitors), and participate in Quality Improvement (QI) projects, audits, and unit-based education.

Requirements

• Education: Registered Nurse from a recognized School of Nursing or University.
• Specialization: Higher Diploma in Paediatric Critical Care Nursing or significant experience in Paediatric Critical Care.
• Licensure: Current and valid licensure with the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK).
• Certification: Certification in European Paediatric Life Support (EPLS).
• Expertise: Demonstrated evidence-based knowledge of current practices in critical care nursing.
• Skills: Computer literacy and the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
