Role Overview
The Clinical Nurse in the Neonatal High Dependency Unit (NHDU) at Aga Khan University Hospital is responsible for providing specialized, high-quality nursing care to neonates with complex medical needs. The role involves continuous assessment, development of individualized care plans, and the execution of advanced clinical interventions in a multidisciplinary setting.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Assessment: Perform comprehensive assessment and re-assessment of patients to identify specific care requirements.
Care Planning: Develop and maintain written care plans that reflect the changing needs of the patient, monitoring the effectiveness of interventions.
Monitoring: Initiate and interpret cardiac monitoring (room and central), communicating critical changes immediately to physicians and the Nurse Manager. Perform hemodynamic monitoring including CVP, UVCs, and ABG evaluations.
Documentation: Maintain accurate and timely documentation of assessment data, investigation results, and all multidisciplinary or family interactions.
Emergency Assistance: Prepare for and assist physicians in emergency procedures such as intubation, insertion of invasive lines, and surfactant administration.
Airway Management: Manage oxygen therapy, nebulization, and suctioning to ensure adequate airway maintenance.
Specialized Procedures: Perform peritoneal dialysis and care for patients undergoing exchange transfusion as required.
Medication Safety: Accurately administer medications according to treatment orders and MMU guidelines.
Environment Safety: Adhere to strict infection control practices and perform safety checks on medical equipment including incubators, ventilators, and cardiac monitors.
Professional Development: Participate in nursing education, quality improvement (QI) projects, audits, and clinical skill checks.
Requirements
Education: Registered Nurse qualification from a recognized School of Nursing or University (BA/BSc/HND).
Specialization: Higher Diploma in Paediatric/Neonatal Critical Care Nursing or significant experience in Neonatal Critical Care.
Licensure: Valid and current licensure with the Nursing Council of Kenya.
Certification: Certification in European Paediatric Life Support (EPLS).
Knowledge: Demonstrated evidence-based knowledge of current practices in neonatal critical care nursing.
Skills: Proficiency in computer use and ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
