The Clinical Nurse for the Children’s Ward at Aga Khan University Hospital is responsible for providing high-quality nursing care to pediatric patients. This role involves comprehensive patient assessment, development of individual care plans, and active participation in a multidisciplinary team to ensure optimal clinical outcomes and family support.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Assessment: Complete comprehensive assessment and re-assessment of pediatric patients to identify specific care needs.
Care Planning: Develop written care plans based on changing patient needs, monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of nursing interventions.
Clinical Collaboration: Actively contribute feedback during patient rounds with physicians; ensure investigations, reports, and clinical updates are readily available.
Medication Management: Administer medications safely, monitor patient responses, and provide medication education to families in line with MMU guidelines.
Documentation: Document all assessment data, investigation results, care provided, and team/family interactions accurately and timely.
Pain Management: Perform pain assessments and initiate analgesia according to hospital protocols.
Nutritional Support: Commence enteral, oral, and gastric feeds as prescribed, assessing absorption and elimination.
Emergency Response: Recognize pre-arrest or arrest states, activate the Emergency Response Team, and participate in resuscitation.
Safety & Infection Control: Maintain a safe environment through strict adherence to infection control practices and safety checks on equipment (incubators, IV pumps, cardiac monitors).
Resource Management: Ensure judicious use of resources, including accurate billing of ward stock and consumables.
Equipment Maintenance: Care for equipment through proper cleaning, storage, and shift-based inventory checks; report non-functional items.
Professional Development: Participate in nursing education, quality improvement (QI) projects, audits, and spot checks.
Mentorship: Assist in orienting new nurses and mentoring junior staff and students.
Leadership: Provide team leadership and manage the unit during assigned shifts.
Requirements
Education: KRCHN, KRM, or BScN from a recognized school of Nursing or University.
Licensure: Current licensure with the Nursing Council of Kenya.
Certification: Valid certificate in Basic Life Support (BLS).
Experience: Minimum of three (3) years of experience in an acute care hospital.
Knowledge: Demonstrated evidence-based knowledge of current practices in pediatric nursing.
