Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi is a private, not-for-profit institution providing high-quality healthcare. The hospital serves as a principal site for clinical training for the University's Medical Colleges and Schools of Nursing and Midwifery. The Clinical Nurse in the Chemotherapy Unit provides specialized nursing care for patients receiving oncological treatments. This role is essential in ensuring the safe administration of chemotherapy and providing holistic support to patients and their families throughout the treatment process.
Responsibilities
Assess patients for chemotherapy to ensure their physical condition and blood parameters are satisfactory to safely receive treatment according to treatment protocols and regimes.
Administer intravenous and oral chemotherapy, and safely dispose of chemo-contaminated material in accordance with Hospital Safety Guidelines.
Provide information regarding treatment and side effects to ensure each patient is prepared and elicit informed consent.
Provide one-to-one and telephone advice to patients and their families regarding treatment side effects and management to ensure care is specific to their needs.
Assess patient readiness for radiotherapy through history taking and physical examination.
Closely monitor patients undergoing treatment, identifying and managing reactions or complications in communication with the physician.
Provide psychological and emotional support to patients and families, referring to counselors when appropriate.
Observe infection control guidelines while caring for central venous lines and advise patients on home care.
Demonstrate proficiency in administering other intravenous therapies, including blood products, bisphosphonates, and IV fluids.
Use evidence-based tools for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating individualized care.
Ensure compliance with health and safety guidelines for staff and patients, reporting any incidents or equipment defects.
Requirements
Registered Nurse from a recognized school of nursing or University.
Current licensure with the Nursing Council of Kenya.
Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).
Minimum 3 years of clinical nursing experience in an acute care hospital.
