Job Description
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is looking for a Climate and Gender Consultant to join the Climate Mobility Innovation Lab (CMIL) Africa team. Established in 1951, IOM is the leading inter-governmental organization in the field of migration, working closely with various partners to promote humane and orderly migration. This role involves developing a needs assessment methodology, conducting research on gender-differentiated risks in climate mobility, and providing strategic recommendations for CMIL-Africa.
Responsibilities and Duties
Methodology & Planning: Develop a methodology, road map, and timeline; conduct desk reviews to identify gaps; and consult with experts to create a mixed-methods needs assessment workplan.
Needs Assessment: Produce a report based on literature reviews and focus group discussions identifying gender-differentiated risks, barriers, and opportunities in climate mobility innovation.
Capacity Building: Build institutional and community capacity to integrate gender-sensitive approaches.
Reporting & Recommendations: Draft a needs assessment report with clear recommendations for CMIL programming, including data collection and analysis.
Validation: Conduct validation workshops and a comprehensive review process to ensure context-sensitive results.
Strategy & Communication: Finalize the assessment report to provide actionable recommendations for CMIL-Africa’s strategic planning and develop communication materials for results campaigns.
Representation: Present results at CMIL workshops/conferences and collaborate with the Africa team for results dissemination.
Other Duties: Undertake all other duties assigned by the supervisor.
Requirements and Qualifications
Education: A Master's degree relevant to climate adaptation, environmental science, migration, or a related field.
Experience:
Proven experience in conducting both quantitative and qualitative research on gender and migration issues.
Strong understanding of datasets and data sources relevant to the gendered realities of climate change.
Prior involvement in the development or implementation of gender programming in relation to climate action.
Experience with participatory and community-based approaches is an asset.
Ability to work independently while maintaining effective coordination with external partners across Africa.
Technical Skills:
Excellent analytical, synthesis, and writing skills, with the ability to tailor outputs for both expert and policy audiences.
Demonstrated technical expertise in survey design and qualitative data collection methodologies.
