Role Overview
Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) is seeking a Baby Minder to be based in Kisumu. The primary purpose of this role is to provide high-quality care for the children of study participants while they are attending the clinic, ensuring a safe, hygienic, and engaging environment. The role involves child supervision, hygiene management, and providing a stimulating environment through play and communication.
Key Responsibilities
Provide high-quality care of study participants’ children and listen, consult with parents, children, and clinic staff.
Ensure a safe and good hygiene standards environment for participants’ children within the clinic environs by creating clean and safe areas that prevent potential hazards.
Ensure children-dedicated equipment such as baby cots are in good condition, well-maintained, safe to use, and age-appropriate.
Ensure comfort, observe, and report any matters that require attention such as accidents or emergencies that may occur among study participants’ children.
Listening to, encouraging, enabling, engaging, motivating, stimulating, and ensuring the safekeeping of the participants’ children.
Change baby nappies, ensure their comfort, and provide a range of play activities, both indoors and outside.
Regularly replenish children's supplies and provide refreshments for children and their parents.
Ensure that appropriate communication methods are used when communicating with children, parents, and fellow staff.
Ensure that the children feel secure, safe, warm, comfortable, and well-fed.
Work with other staff within the study clinic and perform a variety of unskilled tasks as a helper in the clinic.
Requirements and Qualifications
Minimum O-level qualification.
Mandatory short trainings such as Early Childhood Development (ECD), First Aid, or any other related courses.
Mandatory experience of at least 1 year of work experience, preferably with a busy medical organization.
Knowledge of HIV prevention and treatment and family planning services is an added advantage.
Ability to build and maintain positive and professional relationships with parents/carers, children, and other staff.
Must be a good listener, self-driven, flexible, and confidential at all times.
Patient with a sense of humor to engage children in relevant conversations.
Appropriate communication skills and acting as a good role model for children.
Have a growing repertoire of songs, rhymes, and stories to share with children of all ages.
