Role Overview
The Assistant Manager, Internal Audit - Compliance Audit will support the Manager, Shared Services in conducting risk‑based reviews to provide assurance on the Bank’s adherence to applicable banking laws, regulations, prudential guidelines, circulars, and directives issued by the Central Bank and other regulatory bodies. The role strengthens the Bank’s governance, risk management, and internal control environment by identifying compliance risks, evaluating the effectiveness of existing controls, and recommending improvements to enhance compliance and mitigate exposure across business and support functions. The role holder will also perform routine and non-routine internal audits, investigations, procedures/ policies review, project participation and other administrative assignments.
Key Responsibilities
- Audit Planning & Execution: Assist the Manager in planning & executing compliance and control audits. Perform a survey of functions and activities in assigned areas to determine the nature of operations, compliance requirements and the adequacy of the system of control. Prepare the audit plan and the audit work program in line with department standards.
- Control Evaluation: Evaluate the effectiveness of controls, compliance frameworks and governance processes within the assigned areas. Review documentation, processes and practices to identify control gaps, compliance breaches, or operational risks.
- Documentation: Maintain audit working papers and documentation in accordance with internal audit standards and methodologies.
- Assignment Management: Manage the individual audit assignments to ensure that professional standards are maintained and all assigned audit steps are executed within the approved time budget.
- Presentation & Reporting: Make presentations to the management during and after the audit to discuss observations and recommend corrective action. Prepare detailed audit reports outlining findings, risks and recommendations for management action.
- Stakeholder Management: Maintain a positive relationship with key stakeholders and follow up with the auditee to get updates on audit action plans.
- Continuous Improvement: Provides input for the revision of audit programs/review approach to achieve specific objectives in a more effective/efficient manner.
- Mentorship: Cultivate a culture of learning and development; seek coaching and mentoring from supervisors to enhance skills and capabilities.
- Operational Excellence: Ensure all assigned tasks and projects are executed within the approved policies, procedures and SLAs of the department.
- Regulatory Awareness: Stay current with regulatory changes, industry trends and best practices. Assist in training and raising awareness on compliance and governance issues across the bank.
- Technology Adoption: Leverage technology solutions, including AI, to enhance Internal Audit's efficiency and effectiveness.
Requirements
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Law, Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Certifications: Professional Certificates such as CPS, CPA, CIA or compliance-related qualifications are preferred.
- Experience: Minimum 3-5 years of experience in compliance, risk management, internal audit, or financial crime roles within banking or financial services. Prior experience in a Compliance-related role within the Financial Industry is an added advantage.
- Technical Skills: Proficient in MS Office and TeamMate Audit Management Software.
- Regulatory Knowledge: Sound knowledge of Kenyan banking laws, AML/CFT regulations (including customer due diligence CDD/KYC), data protection laws, labor laws, and corporate governance frameworks.
- Sharia Banking: Knowledge of the Fundamentals of Islamic Banking and Islamic Financing Banking Products.
- Core Competencies: Excellent analytical, investigative, and report-writing skills; strong communication and interpersonal skills; customer focus and assertiveness.
