Job Description
Role Overview
The Assistant Director of Veterinary Services is responsible for providing technical and administrative leadership in the delivery of veterinary services for Nairobi City County. The role involves managing veterinary public health, medicine, and surgical services while ensuring compliance with professional standards, administrative excellence, and constitutional integrity.
Key Responsibilities
Provide professional and technical leadership in veterinary medicine and surgery.
Demonstrate high degrees of administrative capabilities as reflected in work performance and results.
Oversee veterinary public health standards and occupational safety within the county.
Lead teams effectively and manage services under high-pressure environments.
Address complex issues through negotiation and problem-solving to improve service delivery.
Ensure all services comply with the Kenya Veterinary Board regulations and professional standards.
Requirements
Academic Qualifications
Master of Science Degree in any of the following disciplines: Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Surgery, Veterinary Public Health, Veterinary Anatomy, Veterinary Pathology and Microbiology, Applied Veterinary Parasitology, Veterinary Epidemiology and Economics, or Occupational Health and Safety from a recognized institution.
Bachelor of Science Degree in Veterinary Medicines (BVM) from a recognized institution.
Professional Qualifications
Registration and retention by the Kenya Veterinary Board.
Certificate in a Senior Management Course lasting not less than four (4) weeks from a recognized institution, OR any other recognized Management Course.
Demonstrated professional and technical competence in veterinary services.
Experience
Must have served for a minimum period of ten (10) years in a relevant field.
At least three (3) years of experience must be in a senior position within the Public Service or Private Sector.
Functional Skills and Behavioral Competencies
Strong leadership, communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines.
Excellent negotiation and problem-solving skills.
Must meet the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya regarding leadership and integrity.
