The Accountant I (GaU Grade 12) is responsible for overseeing accounting operations, ensuring compliance with established financial regulations, and preparing essential financial reports for Garissa University College. The role entails both technical accounting duties and the supervision of staff within the accounting unit to maintain financial integrity and operational efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
Verification of payment vouchers, payment schedules, and ledger postings in accordance with laid down rules and regulations.
Managing all accounting procedures and routine matters effectively.
Preparation of final accounting statements and financial returns (monthly/quarterly).
Organization and management of accounting units within the institution.
Directing, controlling, and coordinating both routine and non-routine accounting matters.
Interpreting financial policies, budgetary control systems, and management of accounting methods.
Supervision and development of staff within the section.
Carrying out other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the management.
Job Specifications and Requirements
A Bachelor's degree from a recognized University in a relevant field such as Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration.
Must be a Certified Public Accountant of Kenya (CPA – K) and a registered member of ICPAK or an equivalent accounting body.
Should have at least five (5) years of relevant professional accounting experience.
Should demonstrate practical knowledge of ICT systems used in accounting.
Consistently demonstrated outstanding qualities for leadership, coordination, and organizational capabilities.
A Master’s Degree in a relevant field will be considered an added advantage.
Must fulfill the requirements of Chapter 6 of the Constitution of Kenya (Leadership and Integrity).
