Role Overview
The Accountant is responsible for managing the day-to-day financial and accounting operations of the organization. Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the role ensures accurate recording of financial transactions, timely preparation of financial reports, and compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements. The Accountant will support the CFO in financial reporting, budgeting, cash management, and audit processes across the organization's operating entities spanning three companies. This role requires a detail-oriented and highly organized finance professional with strong technical accounting skills and a sound understanding of Kenyan financial regulations.
Primary Responsibilities
- Financial Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and up-to-date books of accounts for the organization and its operating entities, recording all financial transactions in compliance with IFRS and Kenyan accounting standards.
- Transaction Processing: Process accounts payable and receivable transactions promptly, perform regular bank reconciliations, maintain the general ledger, and support month-end and year-end closing processes.
- Financial Reporting: Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual management accounts and financial reports for review by the CFO, including supporting schedules, notes to accounts, and financial analysis summaries.
- Consolidation & Budgeting: Assist in preparing consolidated financial statements across operating entities and monitor actual expenditure against approved budgets.
- Treasury & Cash Management: Support the CFO in preparing annual budgets and periodic financial forecasts, and prepare weekly and monthly cash flow reports to support treasury management.
- Tax Compliance: Prepare and file statutory returns including VAT, PAYE, withholding tax, and corporate income tax in compliance with KRA requirements. Ensure timely remittance of NSSF, NHIF, and other levies.
- Audit Support: Support preparation of audit schedules and working papers for external and internal audit exercises, and liaise with auditors during audit processes.
- Asset & Payroll Management: Maintain the fixed assets register including additions, disposals, and depreciation schedules. Process monthly payroll accurately ensuring timely payment of staff salaries.
- Liaison: Provide timely financial information and reports to support the CFO and senior management in decision-making, and liaise with banks, suppliers, and regulatory bodies.
Secondary Responsibilities
- Team Leadership: Supervise, mentor, and provide day-to-day guidance to Finance Assistants and Junior Accountants, ensuring consistent application of accounting standards and internal controls.
- Group Reporting: Coordinate and consolidate financial data, schedules, and reports to facilitate Group-level reporting.
- Capacity Building: Support the CFO in onboarding, training, and performance management of finance team members.
- Process Improvement: Lead or assist in cross-entity finance projects including systems implementations, process improvements, and standardization of accounting procedures across all Group companies.
- Quality Control: Review and quality-check work prepared by Finance Assistants and Junior Accountants, including journal entries and reconciliations before submission to the CFO.
- Regulatory Updates: Maintain an up-to-date understanding of changes in financial regulations, tax laws, and reporting standards.
Qualifications and Experience
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or a related field.
- Certification: CPA (K) qualification required; full certification preferred. ACCA qualification is an added advantage.
- Work Experience: Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in accounting and financial management.
- Sector Experience: Prior experience working in a fintech company, bank, or investment firm is required.
- Compliance: Strong understanding of Kenyan tax laws, IFRS, and statutory reporting requirements.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage, or similar ERP systems).
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills for financial modelling and data analysis.
- Familiarity with the KRA iTax platform and e-filing procedures.
